M&J Roofing Supplies Ltd is a family-run, independent roofing merchant with deep roots in the roofing industry.

Long before M&J became a roofing supplies business, the Bridgman family were local roofing contractors. It was this hands-on experience as contractors that ultimately led to the creation of M&J and has shaped the way we operate ever since.

Where it all started

Back in the early days of torch-on roofing membranes, the products were still relatively new and were not readily available in the UK.

During a visit to a major German roofing exhibition, Michael Bridgman saw torch-on membranes being demonstrated and immediately recognised their potential. Following the visit, Michael began importing torch-on membranes directly from Italy, a country renowned worldwide for the manufacture of high-quality roofing, waterproofing and tanking membranes.

Michael wasn't simply buying and selling the products. As a roofing contractor himself, he was using them on his own projects and quickly developed a strong understanding of their performance and practical application.

Other local roofers began asking Michael about the membranes he was using. Demand grew, and what started as contractors asking where they could get the products soon developed into Michael supplying them to other roofing companies.

And that's where the M&J story really began.

From the garage to Tongham

Initially, the business operated from the garage attached to Michael's home.

As word spread and demand increased, the garage became busier and busier, with more and more roofing contractors visiting to collect materials. Eventually, a complaint was made about the number of vans visiting the residential road, and the local council made it clear that Michael would need to stop selling from the garage or find more suitable commercial premises.

The Bridgman family made the decision to stop contracting and concentrate fully on supplying the roofing trade.

A local premises was found in Tongham, and M&J Roofing Supplies was born.

What started in a domestic garage has grown into an established independent roofing merchant serving roofing contractors, builders and customers across the South.

Our origins as roofing contractors have always influenced the way we run the business.

We understand that supplying roofing materials is about much more than simply putting products on a shelf and selling them. Our customers need people who understand roofing, understand the products and can give sensible, practical advice.

That's why we place such a strong emphasis on product knowledge and technical understanding throughout the business.

The Covid-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges for the roofing industry, businesses and the wider community.

Throughout the pandemic, M&J remained open, closing for just three days in total.

We worked hard to maintain stocks wherever possible, continuing to source products from our suppliers and keeping the doors open for the local roofing trade when many businesses were facing enormous uncertainty.

While some larger companies reduced operations, furloughed staff or closed branches, and some independent merchants reduced their opening hours or closed altogether, the M&J team continued serving our customers.

We are particularly proud of that.

Our customers relied on us, and we believed it was important to keep supplying the roofing trade wherever we could. Contractors still had work to complete, materials were still needed and the country still had to keep moving.

It was one of the most challenging periods our industry has experienced, but it reinforced something that has always been important to us:

Today, M&J remains a family-run independent roofing merchant.

We operate an 18-tonne delivery vehicle equipped with a HIAB crane offering up to 7 metres of reach.

This allows us to deliver a wide range of roofing materials directly to site and, where suitable access is available, position materials where they are required.
